Andes virus is a hantavirus associated with parts of South America and is important because person-to-person transmission has been documented in close-contact settings. That feature makes outbreak investigation and contact tracing especially important.
It should not be used to claim that all hantaviruses spread easily between people. Different hantaviruses have different reservoirs, geography and clinical patterns.
Why official context matters
During international travel events, agencies must distinguish confirmed cases, probable cases, exposed contacts and people under monitoring. Those categories are not interchangeable. This site preserves those labels when official sources provide them.
Media stories are useful for chronology, but official and scientific sources govern counters and map risk.
Prevention remains environmental
Even with the Andes exception, rodent exposure remains central. Avoid aerosolizing rodent contamination, control rodents and follow public-health instructions during a monitored outbreak.
